Conductive Foam for EMI Shielding and Grounding: Combining Contact, Gap Filling, and Recovery

As electronic devices become thinner and more highly integrated, designers have less space available for electromagnetic interference control. Small gaps between a metal enclosure, shielding cover, or grounding structure can interrupt electrical contact and reduce the effectiveness of an otherwise conductive assembly.

Conductive fabric-over-foam gaskets combine electrical contact, mechanical gap filling, and elastic cushioning in one material structure. Lixing’s LXD Series uses conductive fabric, a resilient foam core, and conductive pressure-sensitive adhesive. The thickness can be customized to suit the enclosure gap, making the material relevant to consumer electronics, communications equipment, and automotive electronics that require EMI shielding and precision grounding.

Why do metal enclosures still need a compliant conductive contact?

Real assemblies are affected by tolerances, surface flatness, fastener locations, and long-term vibration. A rigid contact surface may not remain continuously engaged across the entire seam. A compliant conductive foam gasket conforms under compression, fills the mechanical gap, and maintains contact pressure to support a more continuous grounding path.

How does the multilayer structure perform three functions?

  • Conductive fabric outer layer:supports electrical contact in both horizontal and vertical directions between the enclosure, shield, and grounding point.
  • High-resilience foam core:fills mechanical gaps and provides compression recovery so contact can be maintained across assembly tolerances.
  • Conductive pressure-sensitive adhesive:supports positioning, bonding, and stable installation in the target structure.

According to the published product data, the LXD Series provides shielding effectiveness of ≥30 dB from 10 MHz to 1000 MHz. Horizontal surface resistance is ≤0.1 Ω and vertical surface resistance is ≤0.2 Ω. Retention power is rated above 1,440 minutes, and total thickness is customizable.

Selection requires more than one resistance value

Actual gasket performance depends on the complete assembly. Gap size, intended compression, contact width, grounding location, frequency range, and bonding surface should be evaluated together. A gasket that is too thin may not close the gap, while unsuitable compression may affect recovery and long-term contact stability.

If your equipment needs EMI shielding, ESD grounding, mechanical cushioning, and gap compensation within a compact enclosure, provide the drawing, gap dimensions, installation position, and operating environment. These details help clarify a suitable conductive foam thickness and structure.
