Before ordering a custom black ESD conductive silicone sheet, do not stop at one resistance number. Engineering and procurement teams should confirm the resistance type and measurement method, operating temperature and environment, thickness and hardness, grounding interface, dimensional tolerances, and die-cutting requirements. This checklist makes quotations comparable without treating unlike test conditions as equivalent.
Confirm the product, then the measurement context
Lixing’s official Antistatic Silicone Pad page lists 50 ± 10 Ω resistance, 3.0 mm thickness, 30 ± 5 Shore A hardness, and RoHS Pass in its specification table. These are traceable page values, but the page does not publish the electrode geometry, test voltage, conditioning environment, or dimensional tolerances. Request test data under matched conditions before approving a drawing.
Why resistance cannot be separated from geometry and method
The engineering model for a uniform material is R = ρL / A. R is resistance in ohms, ρ is resistivity in Ω·m, L is current-path length in metres, and A is cross-sectional area normal to current flow in m². OpenStax’s resistivity and resistance reference applies this relation to a uniform conductor with a defined cross-section and path. Electrode contact, surface-versus-volume direction, humidity, temperature, pressure, and material nonuniformity can affect a silicone-pad reading, so the listed resistance cannot be used to infer an unpublished resistivity.
IEC 61340-2-3 covers resistance and resistivity test methods for solid materials used to avoid electrostatic charge accumulation, including alternative electrode arrangements for small or non-planar samples. That is why a request for quotation should identify specimen geometry and test configuration.
Five checks before placing an order
- Resistance and method: identify surface, volume, or point-to-point resistance plus electrodes, voltage, read time, and environment.
- Temperature conditions: provide actual operating and storage ranges and ask whether supplied data covers them.
- Thickness and hardness: the product page lists 3.0 mm and 30 ± 5 Shore A; separately confirm tolerances, compression, and conformity needs.
- Grounding interface: define how the pad contacts the fixture and equipment ground; material resistance does not validate the full grounding system.
- Dimensions and converting: submit drawings, keep-out areas, margins, and quantities, then agree on achievable tolerances and inspection.
Plan sampling and acceptance
Build a small sample lot using the target thickness, actual fixture surface, and intended grounding arrangement. Record humidity, temperature, electrodes, pressure, test voltage, and read time before comparing lots. ANSI/ESD S20.20 addresses the development and maintenance of an ESD control program, so material selection should remain connected to grounding, personnel, equipment, and verification procedures.
Conclusion
For precision-electronics fixtures or PCB assembly pads, place the resistance method, environment, thickness and hardness, grounding, and dimensional drawing in the same RFQ. Start with the official specifications and customization information, then validate samples under the intended assembly conditions.
