When an outdoor telecom or industrial-electronics enclosure needs both EMI continuity and moisture sealing, do not select a gasket from shielding dB alone. First define the salt-fog specimen and duration, flange material and finish, seam compression, drainage, and maintenance interval. This article provides a sourcing and validation checklist without treating one salt-spray duration as outdoor service life.
Why salt spray is an interface problem
A gasket crosses an enclosure seam and must preserve electrical contact while deforming enough to seal. Saline moisture can enter at joints, fasteners, corners, or surface defects. If an electrolyte path develops between the flange and conductive layer, contact conditions may change with time. Material choice, interface compatibility, compression, and drainage therefore need to be reviewed together.
What the co-extruded structure does
The official co-extruded conductive silicone gasket structure and specifications identify a nickel-coated graphite conductive exterior bonded to a high-elasticity non-conductive silicone core. The exterior establishes conductive contact; the core supplies deformation and recovery for sealing. The product page lists volume resistivity at ≤0.1 Ω·cm, hardness at 65±5 Shore A, and continuous-use temperature at 160°C. These values retain their stated test context and do not establish salt-spray life for a particular enclosure.
Mechanism 1: manage the chloride entry path
The enclosure should minimize saline-water retention and extend the transport path, but water sealing and corrosion validation are not interchangeable. Review corners, gasket splices, fastener spacing, drainage direction, and local compression. A short uncompressed segment or a persistent liquid film can determine exposure for the whole seam.
A simplified transport equation
Steady-state diffusion can be illustrated by Fick’s first law: J = -D × dC/dx. J is diffusive flux (mol·m⁻²·s⁻¹), D is diffusivity (m²/s), C is concentration (mol/m³), and x is distance (m). The minus sign indicates transport down the concentration gradient. MIT’s diffusion reference explains the concentration-gradient and steady-state assumptions. This one-dimensional, no-convection, approximately constant-D model is conceptual only; it cannot predict this product’s salt-spray hours or service life.
Mechanisms 2 and 3: interface compatibility and stable compression
The material combination among the enclosure flange, fasteners, finish, and conductive exterior affects corrosion risk. A request for quotation should identify each of them and the grounding points. The gasket must also remain in its specified compression window along the seam. Too little compression leaves gaps; excessive compression can raise assembly load or deformation risk. The official page lists compression set at ≤32% after 70 hours at 100°C, but the actual profile and flange still require assembly-level validation.
Five items for the RFQ and validation plan
- Describe the civilian outdoor environment, salt source, wet-dry cycle, and maintenance interval.
- Identify flange, fastener, plating, coating, and grounding-point materials.
- Define cross-section, seam width, target compression, corners, and splice method.
- For a salt-spray report, specify method, duration, specimen, acceptance criteria, and pre/post electrical or shielding checks.
- Keep environmental sealing, conductive continuity, and EMI acceptance as separate requirements.
How to read an ASTM B117 report
ASTM B117 defines the apparatus, procedure, and conditions for maintaining a salt-fog environment. It does not prescribe the specimen or exposure period for a specific product, and stand-alone results should not be directly extrapolated to natural service performance. Procurement should request traceable specimens, conditions, observations, and failure criteria rather than a bare pass statement.
Conclusion: define the seam before selecting the gasket
A nickel-graphite co-extruded structure combines a conductive exterior and elastic silicone core in one profile, making it a candidate where EMI and environmental sealing must be considered together. Before sourcing, write flange materials, finishes, compression, salt-spray conditions, and EMI acceptance into separate requirements, then review the official product data and custom-profile options.
